Capelin Survey Begins, Five Vessels Depart
According to the official website of Síldarvinnslan, a capelin survey began in earnest on January 19, 2026, with five vessels taking part. The vessels include the research ships Árna Friðriksson and Þórunn Þórðardóttir, the fishing vessels Barði NK and Heimaey VE, and the Greenland vessel Polar Ammassak.
According to Barði NK captain Theodór Haraldsson, Þórunn Þórðardóttir left the southern area the previous day, while Árni Friðriksson started its survey from the waters off Akureyri. The other three vessels are scheduled to depart from Neskaupstaður. The survey is expected to last five to six days. Recent reports from trawlers indicate signs of capelin in the northeastern waters, raising expectations.
Greenland Vessel Starts Capelin Fishing
Meanwhile, the Greenland vessel Polar Amaroq began capelin fishing offshore during the night. According to captain Geirs Zoëga, the vessel caught about 250 tons in its first operation, marking a strong start. The fishing is taking place in deep waters off Seyðisfjörður, about 50 to 60 miles to the northeast, where good capelin activity has been observed. The catch will be landed in Neskaupstaður and processed at Síldarvinnslan’s facilities. The crew is encouraged by the results and hopeful for further success in the capelin survey.
