アイスランド北部・東部で抱卵カペリンとニシンの大群が確認
Large Schools of Spawning Capelin and Herring Observed in Northern and Eastern Iceland

アイスランド海洋淡水研究所（Hafrannsóknastofnun）の関係者によると、今年7月に入り、アイスランド北部から東部にかけて抱卵したカペリン（からふとししゃも）やニシンの大きな群れが各地で確認され、漁業関係者の間で注目を集めています。

海洋淡水研究所では、この現象自体は珍しいものではないものの、今年は分布範囲が非常に広く、確認される量も多い可能性があると説明しています。

担当者によれば、今回確認されているカペリンは、今年の冬に産卵したものと同じ年級群と考えられています。カペリンは7月頃まで産卵を続けることがあるため、この時期に産卵個体が見られること自体は異常ではありません。

一方で、北部・東部で産卵したカペリンについては、通常の産卵場とは異なる場所であるため、生まれた稚魚の生育環境が必ずしも良くなく、将来の漁獲対象資源（漁業資源）には十分に加わらない可能性もあると指摘されています。

また、東部海域では「海が黒く見えるほど」のニシンの群れが確認されたとの報告もあり、研究所は現在実施中の約20日間のサバ資源調査航海において、これらの状況についても詳しく調査する予定です。

今年のアイスランド周辺海域では、カペリンやニシンの分布に例年とは異なる傾向が見られており、今後の調査結果が注目されます。

According to the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (Hafrannsóknastofnun), large numbers of spawning capelin carrying roe, along with significant schools of herring, have recently been reported in the waters off northern and eastern Iceland.

Researchers say that the phenomenon itself is not unusual. However, the apparent abundance of the fish and their wide distribution over a large area have attracted considerable attention this year.

The institute believes these capelin belong to the same year class that spawned during the past winter. Since capelin can continue spawning into July, the timing is considered normal.

Scientists also noted that capelin spawning in northern and eastern Iceland are outside the main traditional spawning grounds. As a result, the survival conditions for their offspring may be less favorable, meaning that these fish may not contribute significantly to the future commercial stock.

In addition, fishermen have reported exceptionally large schools of herring in the same region, with some describing the sea as being “black with herring.”

The research vessel Árni Friðriksson, which is currently conducting a 20-day mackerel survey around Iceland, will investigate both the capelin and herring observations during the cruise.

The distribution of capelin and herring around Iceland this summer appears to be different from that seen in recent years, and the survey results will be closely watched by the fishing industry.
