Icelandic Opinion Article Argues for the Necessity of Whaling: "Whales Consume More Than 6 Million Tonnes of Marine Resources Every Year"

Jul. 17, 2026

On July 16, Icelandic fisheries newspaper Fiskifréttir published an opinion article titled “Why Is Whaling Necessary?” written by Árni Sverrisson, Chairman of the Icelandic Association of Shipmasters.

In the article, Sverrisson argues that whale populations around Iceland have recovered significantly and that sustainable whaling, based on scientific advice, is necessary to help maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem.

One of the article’s key points is the estimate that whales around Iceland consume more than 6 million tonnes of plankton and fish every year. This is far greater than Iceland’s annual fishing quota of approximately 700,000 to 900,000 tonnes. According to the author, the growing whale population may be affecting important commercial fish stocks, including capelin and cod.

The article also notes that the North Atlantic fin whale population is estimated at more than 40,000 animals, while Iceland’s annual quota is only 150 whales—less than 0.4% of the total stock. The author therefore argues that scientifically managed, sustainable whaling is fully compatible with responsible resource management.

In addition, the article emphasizes that whaling contributes to employment, tax revenue, and foreign exchange earnings. It concludes by calling for fisheries and marine ecosystem management to be guided by scientific evidence rather than emotional arguments.
