Barents Sea Capelin Fishing Likely to Remain Closed in 2027 as Stock and Juvenile Abundance Stay Low

According to Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, a recent survey conducted by the Institute of Marine Research (HI) in the Barents Sea has confirmed that the capelin stock remains at a low level, with particularly low numbers of juvenile capelin that are essential for future stock recovery.
HI researcher Georg Skaret explained that the survey did not find large quantities of capelin this year, while the abundance of juvenile capelin was also low, as it was last year.
Capelin fishing in the Barents Sea has been closed in 2026. Based on the latest survey results, Skaret said it is likely that commercial capelin fishing will not be recommended for 2027 either.
Capelin is a key prey species in the Barents Sea ecosystem and is particularly important as a food source for cod. According to HI, both the weight and length of young cod have declined significantly over the past three years, which may be related to the low abundance of capelin.
Norwegian and Russian scientists will now discuss the survey results and consider whether capelin fishing should be allowed in 2027. The date of the meeting has not yet been finalized, and the NRK report comes ahead of the official recommendation on the 2027 capelin fishery.
NRK is Norway’s public broadcaster and is comparable to NHK in Japan.
