Russian Fishmeal Prices Surge 2.5 Times Compared to 2024, Driven by Lower Pollock Catches and Rising Raw Material Costs, While Exports to Asia Expand

Oct. 9, 2026

On October 9, 2026, Russian fisheries news website fishery.ru reported a sharp increase in domestic fishmeal prices, along with changes in the country’s production and export structure.

In August 2026, fishmeal prices reached RUB 135–268 per kg, approximately 2.5 times the 2024 level. The main factor was a 13% decline in pollock catches in 2025, which pushed raw material prices up from RUB 28 to RUB 42 per kg.

Russia’s fishmeal production fell 13% year-on-year to 167,600 MT in 2025. However, production recovered in the first half of 2026, increasing 6.4% year-on-year to 96,300 MT.

Approximately 92% of Russia’s fishmeal production is concentrated in the Far East, making high domestic transportation costs a major challenge.

Meanwhile, fishmeal exports reached 68,300 MT, valued at USD 100 million, during January–April 2026. Full-year exports are projected at 135,000–145,000 MT, with China (56%), Japan (18%), and South Korea (13%) being the main destinations.

Most Russian fishmeal contains 55–60% protein, limiting its competitiveness in premium markets. Modernization of production facilities is necessary to produce higher-protein fishmeal. Under the baseline scenario, Russia’s fishmeal production is projected to reach 185,000–195,000 MT by 2030.

Ensuring a stable raw material supply and improving production technology will be key challenges for the Russian fishmeal industry.
