Iceland's Capelin Catch Advice Slashed from 358,000 to 106,000 Tonnes – Stock May Be Underestimated Due to Incomplete Survey Coverage

The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute of Iceland (Hafrannsóknastofnun) announced on October 12 that it had sharply reduced its catch advice for the 2026/2027 capelin season from 358,044 tonnes to 105,773 tonnes, a decrease of approximately 70.5%.

The revised advice is based on an acoustic survey conducted by the research vessels Tarajoq and Árni Friðriksson between August 28 and September 26, covering waters off East Greenland and north of Iceland.

The survey estimated the fishable capelin stock at approximately 560,000 tonnes, significantly below expectations based on the juvenile capelin survey conducted last year.

After accounting for estimated predation and applying the harvest control rule, the calculated catch limit was 158,660 tonnes. However, under the management rule, catch advice based on the autumn survey is limited to two-thirds of this amount, resulting in the revised advice of 105,773 tonnes.

The institute noted that severe weather and sea ice prevented the survey from fully covering the northernmost part of the capelin distribution area. Adult capelin were detected as far north as 71°N, suggesting that the actual stock size may have been underestimated.

Meanwhile, the number of immature capelin was estimated at 65.9 billion fish, resulting in preliminary catch advice of 83,283 tonnes for the 2027/2028 season.

The current advice of 105,773 tonnes is not final. A further stock survey is planned for early 2027, after which the final catch advice will be revised. If additional capelin stocks are confirmed in the northern areas, there is still a possibility of an upward revision.

The results of the upcoming winter survey will therefore be crucial in determining the outlook for Icelandic capelin catches and supply in the 2027 fishing season.
