Japan's Seafood Exports Over 39 Years: Changing Rankings of the Top 15 Export Destinations, 1988–August 2026

Oct. 22, 2026

How have Japan’s major seafood export destinations changed over the past 39 years?

Using data from the Trade Statistics of Japan published by the Ministry of Finance, we have created a Bar Chart Race illustrating changes in the rankings of Japan’s top 15 seafood export destinations by cumulative export value from 1988 through August 2026.

The animation shows how cumulative export values to individual countries and territories have grown over time and how the rankings of major export destinations have shifted.

Unlike annual export statistics, cumulative values reflect the total value of exports over the entire period, providing a long-term perspective on the evolution of Japan’s seafood export markets.

About the Data

This animation covers products classified under HS Chapter 03, including fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and other aquatic invertebrates.

Prepared or preserved fish and seafood products classified under HS Chapter 16 are excluded.

The figures represent cumulative export values from 1988 up to each respective year, rather than annual export values.

Data for 2026 cover January through August only.

The rankings are based on export value, not export volume.
