According to a media report, fisheries negotiations between Norway and Russia over the Barents Sea have been delayed far beyond the usual schedule. Normally, quotas for the following year are settled by this time, but no date has yet been set for this year’s talks.

The delay stems from Norway’s decision earlier this summer to add several Russian fishing companies to its sanctions list, prompting strong reactions from Moscow. Russia is reportedly preparing countermeasures that could be announced before the end of the year, further complicating the situation.

Norwegian officials acknowledge that reaching an agreement for the 2025 fishing quotas is proving extremely difficult. The two countries jointly manage key species such as cod and capelin, and the outcome of the negotiations will have major implications for both sustainable resource management and the fishing economy.
