Norwegian Researcher: Whale Meat Could Help Solve Global Food Shortages
ノルウェーの海洋研究者Arne Bjørge氏は、クジラやアザラシなどの海洋哺乳類資源をより有効活用することで、世界の食料不足問題の解決に貢献できると主張している。
同氏によれば、北大西洋の海洋哺乳類は年間約2,500万トンの水産資源を消費しており、同海域における漁業漁獲量約400万トンの6倍以上に達するという。その一方で、クジラ製品に対する国際的な取引規制は科学的根拠よりも政治的・感情的要因に左右されていると指摘し、豊富な資源量を持つ種については利用拡大を検討すべきだと訴えた。
また、会議ではノルウェー産クジラ製品の認知度向上策として、サッカー選手Erling Haalandら著名人を活用する案も提案された。捕鯨関係者からは、今年捕獲したミンククジラの多くが痩せていたとの報告もあり、海洋生態系の変化との関連についても議論が行われた。

Norwegian marine researcher emeritus Arne Bjørge argues that greater utilization of whale and seal resources could help address global food shortages.
According to Bjørge, marine mammals in the North Atlantic consume approximately 25 million tonnes of seafood each year—more than six times the region’s annual commercial fish catch of about 4 million tonnes. He argues that international restrictions on whale products are influenced more by political and emotional factors than by scientific assessments, and believes that species with abundant and sustainable populations should be utilized more effectively.
During a recent industry conference, participants also discussed ways to improve the image of whale products, including the idea of using famous Norwegian athletes such as Erling Haaland as ambassadors. The conference also heard reports that many of the minke whales harvested this season appeared to be undernourished, raising questions about changes in the marine ecosystem and food availability.
