According to The Fishing Daily on September 14, some major UK supermarkets are replacing Atlantic mackerel in their tinned mackerel products with Chilean jack mackerel.

Major seafood producer Princes has also switched to Chilean jack mackerel. However, the article points out that the two are different species. Atlantic mackerel belongs to the Scombridae family, while jack mackerel belongs to the Carangidae family.

There are also nutritional differences. According to the article, jack mackerel contains around 100 fewer calories per 100g than Atlantic mackerel and has roughly half the omega-3 content. Some consumers have also complained about the product having more bones and a metallic smell.
